First Things, June 2017

May 26, 2017

Last year, it became apparent to your Church Board that our financial plan needed to change. After many years of deficit budgets it became clear that rental income wasn’t going to be sufficient to pay the ongoing costs of maintaining our building and supporting the church we love.
So what to do?

In November, your Church Board authorized a Vision and Values Committee to help us answer that question. The Vision and Values Committee created a process that has been a model of transparency and inclusivity. In January they began holding monthly workshops to share their research. In March they launched a listening campaign to identify our congregation’s core values. In May, they convened discussions after every Sunday service. Every monthly newsletter carried news and invitations to participate. Reports from their work have been available for review for several weeks.

Now it’s time to consider our options and take a vote.

At our June 4 congregational meeting, I hope you will authorize your Church Board to create three committees: a “Stay in Place” committee; a “Property” committee; and a “Seek and Find” committee. A “Yes” vote on all three committees will keep all of our options open as we continue to do the work of charting our congregation’s future.

We are still in the midst of this process. We have a lot more work to do, and more decisions to make over the next year or so. Some of those future decisions will be more difficult than the one we need to make now. Let’s take care of each other, listen to each other, trust each other, work together, and make a good decision together.
