First Things April 2013

April 1, 2013

I want to thank you all for a wonderful installation service. I had a great time. And I think our guests had a great time also.

I want to give special thanks to Arline Dillman, Angie Mason, and Susan Hunt. These three women serve on the Ministerial Relations Committee, and they took on the responsibility of planning the installation service.

Arline made arrangements for parking. Angie helped arrange catering and the marriage equality public witness.

Susan was primarily responsible for the tour of Unitarian history in Los Angeles. We rode our bikes, or carpooled, on the Saturday of the installation weekend. We stopped at only a few places before we stopped for lunch and then came back to the church. It was a fun morning.

One place we visited was the gravesite of Caroline Severance at the Angelus Rosedale cemetery. A few other family members are buried there with her.

We noticed that the marker for the family simply says “Severance” on one side and “Seymour” on the other side. Seymour was Caroline’s maiden name. There is no marker for Caroline’s first name, or dates she lived, or a description of who she was.

We thought that it would be a nice project for the church to create a plaque in her honor that we could attach to the existing marker. We could provide some basic information, but also a sentence about how important she was to this church and to the city of Los Angeles.

After I have a chance to get an OK from Caroline’s living family members, we will design a plaque and raise the money.
