First Things April 2012

March 25, 2012

April 27 and 28, First Church hosts the District Assembly of the UUA – Pacific Southwest District.  Our guests will include more than 200 Unitarian Universalists from across southern California, Arizona, and Las Vegas.

The program begins Friday afternoon with a reception hosted by camp deBenneville Pines in our courtyard.  Grab your dinner from food trucks parked in front of the church.  Then come in to Fritchman auditorium for an opening program that includes a banner parade and a keynote speech by Latino activist, journalist and political commentator, Ruben Martinez.

Saturday morning opens with worship and a panel discussion on religious perspectives on immigration policy.  Morning workshops take place at our church and in the Baptist church across the street.  Lunch is catered by Mama’s Hot Tamales.

Saturday afternoon there’s a second workshop opportunity then come back to Fritchman for the District business meeting, presentation of awards, and the closing program featuring our First Church choir.

Register by April 6 to get the discounted price of $75, or to apply for a scholarship.  Sign up to volunteer by contacting Susan Hunt.

At First Church we are rightly proud of our history, our building, and our unique multicultural, urban ministry.  Our UU sisters and brothers from around the District are eager to see what we do here.  Let’s show them the exciting church we’ve created.  Let’s make our guests feel welcome, and comfortable.  Let’s tell them how much we appreciate their presence at our church.  And let’s demonstrate how ready we are to work with them on creating a strong, active Unitarian Universalist faith throughout the entire District.
