First Things – March 2012

February 28, 2012

Two important meetings of Unitarian Universalists are coming up in April and June.  I hope you’ll attend both.

District Assembly will be here at First Church, April 27 and 28.  The “District” is all the UU churches in Southern California and Arizona.  About 300 people will gather at our church for two days of speeches, workshops, worship, meetings, food and fun. The keynote speaker is Ruben Martinez, journalist and immigration rights activist.  This is a very exciting opportunity to introduce Unitarian Universalists to the unique urban ministry of First Church. Church member Susan Hunt is chairing a committee to organize volunteers for this big event.  I hope all of you will help.  First Church is also presenting two workshops:  one about our 135 year long social justice history, the other about our Neighborhood Programs.

General Assembly is the annual gathering of Unitarian Universalists from across the country.  This year’s event takes place June 20 to 24, in Phoenix, Arizona.  The theme is justice, with a particular focus on the issue of immigration.  General Assembly will be a chance to learn, to strategize, to meet other activists, and to create a massive public witness as we show the nation that Unitarian Universalists stand on the side of love.  We need you there.

Registration for both events will open soon.  Scholarships are available so please don’t let money keep you from attending.  First Church will explore low costs ideas to get to Arizona and places to stay while you’re there.  I will hold a meeting after the worship service on March 18 to answer your questions.

Let’s Go!    Rev. Rick
